There are five different types of mattresses. The first is what is called a Hybrid Mattress. A hybrid mattress combines innerspring coils with foam layers to offer a mix of support and comfort.

The second type is what is called a Memory Foam Mattress. The memory foam mattress uses a type of foam that molds to the body in response to pressure and heat. As a result the body weight on the mattress is evenly distributed.

Thirdly there is an innerspring mattress. This mattress features a coil support system for traditional bounce and support.

Fourthly there is an Orthopedic Mattress. This type of design was approached from the perspective supporting your joints, back and overall body.

The fifth and last type of mattress is a Double-sided Mattress. This was exactly the type of mattress I happened to grow up on…. Remember flipping the mattress over when Spring rolled around ? Those were some great memories. The purpose of the flip was to extend the lifespan of the mattress.

Homewood Mattress Outlet specializes in mattresses as well as the supporting components. You will walk away from Homewood Mattress Outlet with the complete package. After you have chosen your perfect mattress you will then need to consider what type of bed frame or foundation you will be using. The right bed frame or foundation can enhance your mattress’s performance – but it can also enhance your overall sleep quality. My personal favorite is the Adjustable Base. This construction type gives you the wonderful ability to adjust to various positions for personalized comfort and health benefits. Box Spring foundations are available in two sizes. There is the traditional box spring and it consists of a cloth covered wooden frame with springs on the inside. It is traditionally 8-9” in depth and the Low-profile Box Spring is a thinner version that provides a lower bed height. The next option is a Bunkie Board. It sits between the mattress and bed frame or box spring. It’s a low profile alternative to the traditional box spring. Ranging in sizes 1-3 inches. The last two options are the Foundation and Zero Gravity. The Foundation is simply a base support for a mattress very similar to a box spring but much more sturdy. And last is the Zero Gravity which is a bed designed to reduce stress on the body by evenly distributing the weight across the surface of the mattress. It is common to see this type with adjustable beds.

DId you know that there is a fire protection standard for mattresses? Yep, there sure is. Back in July of 2007, all mattresses manufactured or sold in the U.S. were required to meet strict new federal, open-flame flammability standards. This regulation, designed to reduce the fire severity and provide more escape time, forced manufacturers to use flame-resistant barriers or chemical treatments. Mattresses must be able to withstand exposure to an open flame for 30 minutes. This standard was designed to keep heat release rates below 200 kW preventing rapid and flashover-type fires to a minimum. Manufacturers are commonly using materials like Rayon, Kevlar, and silica based materials to create a fire resistant barrier and this often results in not needing to apply toxic chemicals directly to the foam. So heads up please ask your sales rep to reveal the components of your mattress. When this information was first disclosed it was estimated that this standard prevented hundreds and hundreds of deaths and more than a thousand injuries annually.
